SPOUSAL OPEN WORK PERMIT
A spousal open work permit is a type of work permit that allows the spouse or common-law partner of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to work in Canada. This work permit is not tied to a specific employer, which means the spouse or common-law partner can work for any employer in Canada.
To be eligible for a spousal open work permit, the Canadian citizen or permanent resident must sponsor their spouse or common-law partner for permanent residency in Canada. Once the sponsorship application is submitted to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the spouse or common-law partner can apply for the spousal open work permit.
The spousal open work permit application can be submitted online or by mail and requires various documents such as a marriage certificate or proof of common-law relationship, proof of the Canadian citizen or permanent resident’s status, and the spousal open work permit application fee.
Having a spousal open work permit can be beneficial for the spouse or common-law partner as it allows them to gain Canadian work experience and potentially qualify for permanent residency in Canada through the spouse or common-law partner sponsorship program. It can also help the couple integrate into Canadian society and culture.
To be eligible for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP), if you meet all of the requirements for a spousal open work permit, you can apply for one at a Canadian visa office.
When applying for a SOWP, you must provide documents to prove your identity and your relationship status.
You can apply for a SOWP online.
Wait for a decision and if your application is approved, you will receive an electronic version of your work permit.
